Fabric Care Tips

Most people dry clean too rarely — or too often. Here's the practical guide to how often each type of garment actually needs professional cleaning.

Here's a question we get asked constantly: "How often should I dry clean this?" And the honest answer is — it depends on the garment, how often you wear it, and what it's made of. Dry clean too rarely and fabrics lose their freshness and shape. Dry clean too often and you risk unnecessary wear on delicate fibres.

This guide gives you clear, practical timelines for every common garment type — so you know exactly when to book your next pickup with Suprimo.

Suits & Formal Wear: Less Is More

A common mistake is dry cleaning a suit after every single wear. Over-cleaning actually breaks down the internal structure of a jacket — the canvas, padding, and interfacing that gives it its shape. The rule of thumb at Suprimo: dry clean your suit every 3–4 wears. Between cleans, hang it on a shaped hanger, brush off dust, and air it overnight after wearing.

If you've spilled something — soup, chai, ghee — bring it in immediately. Stains that sit for more than 24 hours are significantly harder to remove.

Suprimo tip: Rotate between two or three suits if you wear them regularly. Less frequent cleaning per suit means they last longer and look better for years.

Silk Sarees: After Every Occasion Wear

Silk is delicate and absorbs sweat, perfume, and oils from your skin every time you wear it. These don't always show up immediately — but over time they yellow the fabric, weaken the fibres, and create odour. We recommend dry cleaning a silk saree after every occasion wear, especially Kanjeevarams, Banarasi silks, and embroidered pieces.

If you wear lighter silk sarees more casually (for office or daily wear), every 2–3 wears is usually fine — as long as you're not sweating heavily in them.

Wedding & Occasion Wear: Always Clean Before Storing

This is the one rule most people get wrong. A lehenga or sherwani that looks clean after the wedding isn't necessarily clean — food residue, sweat, and fragrance settle into the fabric invisibly. Left untreated during storage, these become permanent stains that no cleaner can fully remove.

Always dry clean occasion wear before storing it, especially if it's going away for months or years. You'll be grateful when you take it out looking exactly as beautiful as when you wore it.

Home Fabrics: Don't Forget What You Can't See

Curtains, sofas, carpets, and rugs are some of the most overlooked items in any household — yet they carry some of the highest dust, allergen, and bacteria loads. Suprimo handles all of these:

  • Curtains: Clean every 6–12 months. Dust from curtains circulates through the air every time they're moved. Families with allergies or asthma should clean more frequently.

  • Sofas & upholstery: Every 12–18 months for regular households. If you have pets, young children, or eat on the sofa, consider every 8–12 months.

  • Carpets & rugs: Once a year is the minimum. Heavy-traffic areas, or any carpet with a spill or stain, should be cleaned sooner.

Seasonal Fabrics: Clean Before You Store

Woollens — shawls, sweaters, heavy kurtas — should always be dry cleaned before being stored at the end of the cold season. Soiled fabrics stored in the wardrobe attract insects (especially moths), develop odour, and set stains permanently. A clean garment stores beautifully and comes out fresh the following winter.
